An anonymous partisan dispatched from the Southwest gives an account of a week spent battling ICE in the streets of the Twin Cities while navigating trauma, exhaustion, and the sublimity of a popular uprising. These notebooks were emailed to L&F anonymously.
January 17th
Things have been relatively quiet so far, we spent most of yesterday preparing logistics for the influx of out-of-towners. The people who have already been going hard here are stretched thin and very tired, many of them have been arrested and/or beaten by police and are trying to recover while also orienting new arrivals. It’s created a fertile ground for miscommunication and conflict but so far we’ve mostly been able to work through it and being here feels really good. I would caution anyone still planning to come to lock down your logistical needs and communicate them in great detail as far in advance as possible, and consider renting a car/sleeping space of your own if you can afford it.

This is a partial report back. I wasn’t able to make it by 6:00 but I did make it to the ICE Headquarters in time to see the following event by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. I knew from the moment I arrived that nobody holding a megaphone that night would be keen to hand it to such a radical as myself and so I fell into a mode of operation I’m comfortable with around Marxist organizations- that of a reporter. Maybe this time I was in a ski mask, but I dedicated my time there to forming an analysis of their tactics and organization in light of my experience witnessing political movements from across all of the possible political spectrums (from economic to social to schizophrenic).

The Southwest stands as both a crucible and a casualty of empire, a scorched frontier where settler colonialism, capitalist extraction, and technological “progress” converge in ritual violence against land and against life. From greenwashed data centers to uranium and copper mines polluting Indigenous lands, the region reflects the on going violence empire relies on in order to survive.
This gathering is an invocation a space to trace the lines of power and extraction, and imagine insurgent ecologies beyond the machinery of civilization.
This gathering is a chance to learn from one another across state lines and frontlines to share stories of past and present resistance, build connections across our diverse movements, and explore ways to defend land, water, and community against the forces that seek to divide and exploit us.

An Ecological Argument for Independence
The following was first distributed as a short pamphlet for No Kings II in Downtown Phoenix
Export oriented agriculture is killing us. Arizona is not barren, and our methods for farming (human) food are unmatched in their water efficiency. What has drained our rivers and killed our soil is growing feed for foreign livestock. Our lives hang on by short term agreements made with bordering states over who can squander how much of the Colorado River.
Aside from the rivers, our groundwater is being poisoned with heavy metals and the runoff of Uranium mining (which encroaches on the lands of our Havesupi neighbors to the north). For as long as we let D.C. keep us under their heel, this will go on for the sake of their military industrial complex.
Then how do we break free from the grip of the Federal government? How do we seize the local self determination to save our own lives? The shutdown proved how thoroughly this regime has stripped the state apparatus of token programs meant to keep us dependent on them. All it has to offer are the agents occupying our cities. Sixty confirmed ICE raids culminating in hundreds of kidnappings have been documented over just this summer.
Instead of being the Empire’s borderlands, this could be known as our land. We don’t need to stay a possession of some Imperial force. In modern times, the only way anyone will survive here is if we reject those frameworks seeking to impose themselves on us and build our own to suit ourselves.

The situation we face is becoming untenable.
We watch in horror as masked agents of the state abduct our neighbors and loved ones off the street, as our already delicate system of rights and liberties is quickly erroded, and as the relentless extraction from our earth for the benefit of the state and capital brings us closer to extinction.
This is a call for all anarchists and anti authoritarians in so-called Arizona to show up and stand in solidarity with our community against the rise of fascism. It is a call to be among those people who have grown tired of liberalism, to welcome them into autonomous movements and ways of acting. It is a call to snap out of paralysis and into action against the order that maintains this brutality, to spread anarchy across the Valley and beyond.
Gather on the lawn in front of the Senate building, look for our black flags and banners. bring materials to share, distro, and have fun!
